A Cedar Rapids man pleads to hitting, kicking and beating a teen with an extension cord and bat. The teen had multiple injuries to his face, head and body, including a kidney. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Samantha Bevans showed no visible reaction when she heard the jury’s verdict, convicting her of first-degree murder for suffocating her stepmom, Jodie Bevans, in July 2022. She faces a life sentence without parole.

Iowa Supreme Court ruled Friday that a former Iowa City police officer, who resigned in lieu of termination for misconduct, can appeal a Civil Service Commission ruling to Johnson County District Court. The commission had denied the officer’s petition to withdraw his resignation.

Maldonaldo-Vazquez was trying to sleep and, after telling his roommate and her friend to be quiet, the friend -- Brannon Johnson, 22, of Cedar Rapids -- fatally shot him.
