The Iowa Department of Transportation is working with Autobase in the Iowa City area testing drone use to help monitor and safely and efficiently redirect traffic around wrecks, temporary road closures and construction.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s annual Click It or Ticket campaign started this week in advance of Memorial Day weekend. The Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is urging Iowan’s to buckle up as part of the campaign, as traffic fatalities in the state remain higher than in previous years.
The legislation that has stalled in previous years appears to have more momentum this session.

Iowa is among a minority of states that does not ban hand-held use of mobile devices while driving.

Already this year, there have been 110 fatalities on Iowa roads, which is 15 more than a year ago at this time and 29 more than in 2020, according to Iowa Department of Transportation data. Based on the current number, an Iowa State Patrol spokesman said Iowa is on track to see 360 fatalities this year.
There were 353 traffic deaths in Iowa in 2021, according to a preliminary figure from the state transportation department. That is the highest number of traffic fatalities in Iowa since 2017, when there were 402, and a nearly 6 percent increase over the previous year.
