Nicholas Gorsich, Ford Washburn are co-stars at the Forwald-Coleman Relays
Track and field: Gorsich pulls away down the stretch to run 52.02 in the 400 hurdles, and Washburn posts a fast distance double (9:04.28 and 4:10.93)

IOWA CITY — The race turned on the final curve.
Somewhere between the seventh hurdle and the eighth, Linn-Mar’s Nicholas Gorsich turned into Superman with a black Nike headband.
“I saw (Iowa City West’s Aidan Jacobsen) coming up on me just before the final stretch, so I just kicked it,” Gorsich said.
“I had thought about this race, over and over, and it was exactly like I envisioned it.”
Fast.
Gorsich blazed upward on the all-time Iowa chart in the 400-meter hurdles, climbing to No. 8 with a 52.02-second clocking.
It was more than a second faster than his previous career-best.
“I knew I could go so much faster if I had somebody pushing me,” Gorsich said. “I didn’t do the high hurdles tonight; I really wanted to rest for this.”
Gorsich and Iowa City High’s Ford Washburn were co-stars of Thursday’s Forwald-Coleman Relays at Bates Field/Raffensperger Track.
Washburn sailed through the 3,200 meters (9:04.28) and the 1,600 (4:10.93).
His 1,600 effort ranks No. 7 all-time in Iowa.
“I was hoping I could go under 4:10,” Washburn said. “I was a little slow the first lap, then fell off in the second. I got way too comfortable. Then I picked it back up.
“My third lap was was faster than my second, and that usually doesn’t happen.”
In the 3,200, Washburn ran with the pack for the first mile, then closed with a 4:20 second mile.
“I just chilled out for the first mile,” Washburn said.
Washburn owned the distance events, Matt Schaeckenbach claimed the high jump and the 110-meter high hurdles, and City High won the boys’ team title with 145 points. Iowa City West was second with 99 points, followed by Linn-Mar (83).
West’s Izaiah Loveless won the 100, Todd Rent claimed the 200, and the duo teamed up on the Trojans’ victorious 400-meter relay.
“I think I’m right in there (among the state’s top sprinters),” Loveless said. “I think I can compete with anyone. I have a chance at something great.”
West Des Moines Valley led a balanced girls’ team race, compiling 91 points. Ames was second with 86, followed by Linn-Mar (82.5) and City High (82).
The Tigers won the meet despite not winning an event all night.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Swartzendruber twins had a hand in four titles. Addison won the 200 (26.53) and 400 (57.01), Sidney edged City’s Ani Wedemeyer in the 800 (2:16.74), and the duo teamed with Jovie Veach and Emerson Swearinger to run 3:59.10 in the 1,600 relay.
“I knew it was going to be really competitive,” Addison Swartzendruber said after the 400. “I was excited to run here. This is where I PR’d last year.”
The twins are 1-2 in the state in the girls’ 400, and they’ll go head-to-head at the Drake Relays next week.
“We’ll push each other, that’s for sure,” Addison said.
Linn-Mar’s Kennedy Evans won the shot put (39 feet, 1 1/2 inches).
Thursday was the final day before the Drake qualification deadline. Unofficial qualifiers will be announced Friday morning.
