The Eastern Iowa Airport will buy a residential property south of the airport because of concerns the groundwater there is contaminated by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS.

The Eastern Iowa Airport’s governing board will consider buying a residential property valued at $770,000 because the home has a drinking water well with high levels of toxic chemicals found in firefighting foam used for decades at the airport.

Iowa travelers will see bustling airports, clear roads, busy highways and lower prices at the pump this week. The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is expected to be the busiest in several years and a record-setter for air travel.

A monthslong wait for a permit to install underground wells for a geothermal heat system at the Eastern Iowa Airport may delay construction of the final phase of a 10-year, $120 million renovation.

Airport Director Marty Lenss said in a statement that the strong passenger traffic is promising as the holiday travel season approaches.

By testing 20 wells, as well as sampling groundwater and soil, airport leaders hope to understand the scope and direction of PFAS contamination and see if there is evidence of a link between tainted wells and firefighting foam used for decades at the airport.

A walk-through Monday at The Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids was part of a screening demonstration organized by Iowa Republican U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson, who has been working with TSA officials to ease challenges veterans and those with disabilities face when traveling with service animals.

The Federal Aviation Administration has approved Kirkwood Community College’s new aviation maintenance technology program, allowing it to become a certified aviation maintenance school and begin offering classes this fall.

The Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids is one of 25 airports in the U.S. that are testing new facial recognition technology in TSA lines. The new technology adds to the previous authentication methods by taking a picture of the traveler to match against their ID.

The new flight begins Nov. 17 and, according to a company spokesman, will fly twice a week.
