A junior from Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Maria Trotta has qualified for multiple events in the state swim meet before. During Saturday’s regional swim meet at the Linn-Mar Aquatic Center, Trotta turned it up a notch.

When the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union assigned teams to the six regionals, the top five ranked schools were placed at different sites. All regional swim meets begin at noon on Saturday.

Led by senior Jade Roghair and junior Kolby Reese, Iowa City West came up big in the final two relays to claim its fifth straight Mississippi Valley Conference girls’ swimming title. The Trojans won just four of 12 events, but used their depth to finish with 409 points.

The Roghair name has been synonymous with girls’ swimming at Iowa City West for more than a decade. Now Jade, a senior, is one of the state's best distance freestylers, posting the top times in the state this year in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles.
