Iowa high school state wrestling finals 2021: Championship results, team scores and more

DES MOINES — For the second time in three seasons, West Delaware has completed a golden sweep.

The Hawks soared to the program’s fourth Class 2A team title at the state wrestling tournament Saturday night in Des Moines. On the heels of state duals championships, they were crowned alongside Waverly-Shell Rock (3A) and Don Bosco (1A).

West Delaware placed all 11 qualifiers on the awards podium, including champions Wyatt Voelker at 195 pounds and heavyweight Carson Petlon. The Hawks tallied 150 points, topping runner-up Osage by 54.

“It means a lot when you see the hard work kids put in pay off,” Hawks Coach Jeff Voss said. “Sometimes it doesn’t, but for this group it did.

“It’s kind of emotional when it’s all winding down because you know in the room what they’ve put into this. To see it actually happen, it is pretty gratifying.”

Don Bosco captured its third straight title, clinching during Saturday morning’s consolation round. The Dons also finished with 11 medalists, including four finalists, with 179 1/2 points. Lisbon had three champions and was runner-up for the second straight season for its sixth consecutive top-two finish.

The Lions’ Robert Avila Jr. and Solon’s Hayden Taylor won their third individual titles and could become four-time state champions next season. Avila won the 145-pound crown in 1A, while Taylor won the 2A 160 bracket.

Cascade senior Aidan Noonan capped his prep career with his third championship.

Waverly-Shell Rock had three champs and 154 1/2 points. Waukee was second with 146 and Southeast Polk was third at 143.
