CEDAR RAPIDS — The Iowa High School Athletic Association released boys' basketball substates for Class 3A and 4A Friday, and the power seems to be split up.
Defending champion Cedar Falls is the favorite in 4A Substate 3, though Linn-Mar, Waterloo East and Waterloo West are capable teams. CF is ranked eighth by The Gazette.
In 4A-4, you have two very good teams in third-ranked Bettendorf and No. 7 Dubuque Senior. In Class 4A Substate 5, top-ranked North Scott is joined by Cedar Rapids Prairie, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Muscatine, Dubuque Hempstead and Pleasant Valley.
4A-6 is the other Eastern Iowa substate and consists of ninth-ranked Iowa City West, fifth-ranked Davenport Central, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Davenport West, Ottumwa and Burlington.
In Class 3A, the Gazette area has schools in four substates as well. Metro mates Marion and Cedar Rapids Xavier have been split up for a second straight year, with Marion in a substate that features top-ranked Maquoketa, among others.
Xavier is in an evenly matched substate with no ranked teams.
