IHSAA releases 2019 Class 1A, 2A boys' basketball district assignments

Jan. 18, 2019 3:36 pm, Updated: Jan. 18, 2019 3:58 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS — A prevailing theory out there is that North Linn's boys' basketball team could have a bit easier — emphasis on the word 'bit' — time winning a state championship in Class 2A than in 1A.
Moving up a class this season, the Lynx don't have to worry about the juggernaut known as Grand View Christian and its plethora of international transfers.
But just getting to the state tournament could prove to be a more difficult time than it would have in 1A. Top-ranked North Linn found out its postseason path Friday, and it's tough.
In its district is a drastically improved team from Oelwein that is 9-3, with two of those losses to Class 3A Waverly-Shell Rock. Then there is Dyersville Beckman (10-3), which plays in the 3A Wamac Conference.
In the corresponding district lies defending 2A state champ Cascade.
River Valley Conference foes Camanche and West Branch highlight District 7 in 2A. In corresponding District 8 is Iowa City Regina.
In Class 1A, unbeaten third-ranked Montezuma appears to be the top team in a district that includes rival Lynnville-Sully. Linn County schools Alburnett, Lisbon, Springville and Cedar Valley Christian are in a district with Belle Plaine, Calamus-Wheatland, Iowa Mennonite, Highland, English Valleys and Iowa Valley.
Coaches will seed the districts the final week in January, with pairings determined accordingly. Class 3A and 4A postseason assignments will be released by the Iowa High School Athletic Association next Friday.
