President Joe Biden on Wednesday announced his long-awaited plan to deliver on his campaign promise to provide $10,000 in debt cancellation for millions of Americans — and up to $10,000 more for those with the greatest financial need.

House Democrats blocked a measure by U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, that would have stopped President Joe Biden from canceling hundreds of billions of dollars in student loan debt.

The administration announced the action as President Joe Biden considers broader student loan forgiveness for millions of Americans. As a candidate, Biden said he supports forgiving $10,000 in student loans for all borrowers. He later indicated that such action should come through Congress, but the White House has said he is considering whether to pursue it through executive action.

Navient has inked a $1.85 billion settlement with a coalition of state attorneys general, including Iowa’s, to resolve allegations that it steered borrowers into costly repayment plans and predatory loans.

After being frozen for over a year during the pandemic, federal student loan payments are set to resume Oct. 1.
