Mercy Iowa City’s delay in closing its bankruptcy sale is hurting hospital operations by, among other things, scaring away patients and providers, eroding community confidence, and adding expense to an estate already depleted of resources – according to a Wednesday court filing asking a judge to force the issue.

In a letter updating its tens of thousands of patients on how this week’s news of Mercy Iowa City’s bankruptcy could affect them and their care, Steindler Orthopedic Clinic on Friday vowed to “remain independent” — even as the 150-year-old community hospital, and Steindler’s longtime partner, “will cease to exist.”

Despite inflation, labor cost and supply chain snags that stalled the original timeline, a new Steindler North Liberty Ambulatory Surgery Center now is under construction just east of Interstate 380, north of Forevergreen Road – adding to the health care construction boom underway in that community.

Given the uncertainty of Mercy Iowa City, Steindler now is considering performing surgery at hospitals in Cedar Rapids too – including UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Hospital and Mercy Medical Center, both Cedar Rapids, and other in-patient hospitals regionally.

Inflation, labor costs, and supply chain issues have upped the total cost and expanded the construction timeline for a new Steindler North Liberty Ambulatory Surgery Center planned near where the University of Iowa is building its new hospital – which also recently aired substantial cost increases.

Seven weeks after the state approved construction of a new $19.2 million Steindler North Liberty Ambulatory Surgery Center near the booming I-380 and Forevergreen Road corridor, the affiliated Steindler Orthopedic Clinic on April 25 sold its Iowa City home base for $11 million.

After a surprise last-minute withdrawal of all opposition to a new Steindler North Liberty Ambulatory Surgery Center – including from a group of surgeons that previously vowed legal action to halt the endeavor – a state council Monday unanimously granted a certificate the project needs to proceed.

After butting heads with community health care providers opposed to its plans to build a new hospital in North Liberty, University of Iowa Health Care now is echoing its critics’ concerns as the state considers a proposal to build a new ambulatory surgery center down the road from UIHC’s project.

Talks between Steindler Orthopedic Clinic and an unnamed hospital system to build a new inpatient hospital alongside an ambulatory surgery center in what’s fast becoming a health care hub in North Liberty are ongoing — but they’re not moving fast enough to merit state consideration at this time.
