Gabe and Cooper Sanders of Vinton-Shellsburg returned to Iowa from Utah a few months ago in time for wrestling season. Both advanced to Saturday night’s Class 2A state wrestling finals.

The Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association girls’ state tournament has been a contributing factor to the boom in participation and a highlight event for girls’ high school wrestling in the state. This year was even more special.

University of Northern Iowa Coach Doug Schwab had a better feeling after this year’s UNI Open. Of course, three champs and six finalists help. Iowa’s Cullen Schriever and Patrick Kennedy also earn titles and much more.

South Tama’s Logan Arp is a two-time state wrestling medalist and has state title aspirations this season. He capped the first weekend of tournaments with a memorable victory and the 138-pound title at Independence.
