Here are the 2023 Iowa girls’ soccer all-state teams

When Sofia Bush graduated early to start her journey at the University of Iowa, Linn-Mar’s girls’ soccer program lost the top scorer in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

On a balanced team, there was room for someone to up their goal-scoring level. In stepped Athena Sheets.

Sheets doubled her career tally with a team-high 22 goals as a senior and was named to the Class 3A all-state first team by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

Linn-Mar (16-4) advanced to the state tournament for the first time since 2019 and also had a pair of second-team all-staters in senior Haley Setrum and sophomore Abi Roberts. Roberts led the Lions with 15 assists and scored 21 goals after an 18-goal freshman campaign. Setrum tallied 10 assists and eight goals.

“(Qualifying for state) was definitely something that (the seniors) wanted to accomplish in their careers, so happy for them that they were able to do that, that they were able to lead a team that was very dominant,” Linn-Mar Coach Marco de Leon said after the Lions’ state quarterfinal loss to eventual champion Johnston. “They were great leaders, too.”

Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Reegan Hess led the MVC with 29 goals and was named to the all-state second team in 3A.

Vinton-Shellsburg senior Ashlie Meyer was the only other Gazette-area first-team honoree, in Class 1A.

Des Moines Christian’s Sami Webster was named Miss Iowa Soccer. She totaled 15 goals and 15 assists for the Class 1A top-ranked Lions before tearing an ACL in the 10th game of the season.

Mason City’s Shannon Dykstra was named Coach of the Year as the Riverhawks (16-3) set a school record for wins in a season.
