All-MVC boys’ soccer 2022: Kennedy’s Lwings Kabula, Cedar Falls’ Truman Unruh named players of the year

Cedar Falls’ Truman Unruh and Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Lwings Kabula have been named Mississippi Valley Conference boys’ soccer athletes of the year.

Kabula, a senior forward, received the Valley Division honor after scoring 13 goals and adding four assists for the Cougars (9-9). He had a goal and an assist on April 21 in a 2-1 win over Iowa City Liberty, then the top-ranked team in Class 3A. He scored at least one goal in every game during Kennedy’s late-season six-game win streak.

Unruh was the Class 3A leader in goals, ranking second in the entire state with 38. The senior forward received the Mississippi Division award.

Iowa City Liberty’s Jaxyn Logan (Mississippi Division) and Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Carson Jeffery (Valley Division) were named the MVC goalkeepers of the year.

MVC coaches of the year are Sonny Travis of Iowa City Liberty (Mississippi) and Mike Penning of Waterloo West (Valley). Travis and the Lightning (15-4) won a school-record 15 games this spring and tied for second in the division standings.
