A state board on Thursday awarded a combined $1.3 million toward two CEdar Rapids projects: one that will revitalize Cedar Lake through the grassroots ConnectCR initiative and the other that will renovate the African American Museum of Iowa.

Cedar Lake revitalization as part of ConnectCR and the African American Museum of Iowa’s renovation project are among 34 seeking Community Attraction and Tourism grant funding.

The veterans service and support organization recently opened in a new, larger location in northeast Cedar Rapids. The new building is located next to a city bus stop and it has a full commercial kitchen to help with serving meals. It also offers more recreational and family activities to hopefully bring in younger veterans an connect them to a services and support network.

Improvements to Mount Vernon Road are one of more than 40 projects planned this year on Cedar Rapids streets as the 2023 construction season gets underway.

The Cedar Rapids dewatering project will use 30 wells to dry out a segmented portion of the lake before levee construction begins.

“You don’t often get the chance to reprogram 130 acres in the middle of your city,” council member Tyler Olson said of the effort to craft a greenway plan to transform the 130-acre space along the west side of the Cedar River.
