CEDAR RAPIDS — A longtime food truck has found a more stationary location in New Bohemia.
Smiley’s Soup and Sandwiches, often parked in the NewBo City Market’s yard during Food Truck Tuesdays, has taken residence inside the market. Its new location opened May 1.
The food truck owned by Nicholas Fitzgerald first opened in May 2021 with Cubanos, cheesesteak sandwiches and Kentucky Hot Browns — recipes his family has been making at home for years. Today, the menu includes other sandwiches in addition to wraps and sandwich-friendly sides.
The business, run by Fitzgerald’s father and brother, was named in honor of the owner’s late friend, Dustin.
“When my friend Dustin passed away, I wanted to do something in his honor, start a new chapter in my life, find a new career,” Fitzgerald told The Gazette in 2021. “Dustin had a great relationship with his father. I wanted to spend more time working with my father.”
