The U.S. Department of Justice has contacted an unnamed state official about Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate’s directive, according to Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird.

In addition to the usual logistical challenges of putting on an election, Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate and county auditors are dealing with added issues like a shortage of poll workers on Election Day, and misleading or outright false information being delivered to voters.

Also, the Iowa agriculture department is increasing testing requirements for dairy cattle before they can be transported to a fair. The directive comes amid a bird flu outbreak that has impacted 11 dairy herds in northwest Iowa.

Meantime, a year later Iowa has not replaced an interstate compact for comparing voter registration lists across states.

Flanked by cybersecurity and law enforcement officials on Tuesday, Iowa’s top election official said Iowans’ votes in the 2024 primary election — scheduled for next Tuesday — will be counted “accurately and securely.”
