IOWA CITY - A West Des Moines man is accused of assaulting a woman he met online and demanding she give him cash.
According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, 31-year-old Jeremy E. Woods met a woman online. The two decided to meet for breakfast, so Woods went to the woman's Iowa City apartment the morning of Jan. 24, police said.
Police said while at the apartment, Woods asked to use the woman's bathroom and when he came out his demeanor had changed. Woods allegedly demanded cash from the woman and threw her against her door by her throat. She told him they could go to the bank and withdrawal cash, police said.
Police said when the two left the apartment, Woods was scared away by a neighbor who noticed the woman was in distress. Woods threatened to kill the woman before he left, police said.
Woods has been arrested and faces charges of extortion, a Class D felony; first-degree harassment, an aggravated misdemeanor; and assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor. He is currently in custody at the Polk County Jail.
