Victim identified in Cedar Rapids condominium fire

CEDAR RAPIDS - The woman who was pulled from a burning condominium and later died from her injuries has been identified.

Robyn Furmanski, 62, was pronounced dead at St. Luke's Hospital Thursday after Cedar Rapids firefighters removed her from a burning six-unit condominium at 1218 Oakland Road early Thursday morning. Furmanski's cause of death remains under investigation, as does the cause of Thursday's fire, according to the fire department.

Crews were called to the condominium around 2:42 a.m. for a report of a fire in one of the units. Firefighters encountered smoke coming from the building. The Cedar Rapids Police Department confirmed that everyone was out of the building, except for Furmanski, who lived in Unit D of the condominium.

Firefighters attacked the exterior fire, which had spread up the outside of the building. Crews entered the affected unit and were met with 'heavy fire, smoke and heat conditions,” according to a media release. Furmanski was removed and transported to St. Luke's Hospital with unknown injuries.

One unit sustained fire damage and the other five units have significant smoke damage, authorities said.
