Two arrested after Mount Vernon burglaries

MOUNT VERNON - Two men face charges after committing a series of burglaries in Mount Vernon Monday morning.
According to the Mount Vernon Police Department, officers responded to a burglary in progress at 4:09 a.m. in the 300 block of Palisades Road SW. The victim reported numerous items were taken from a vehicle, police said.
Police took another burglary in progress report at 6:43 a.m., this time in the 300 block of Second Street NW. Officers responded and determined that two men were breaking into parked vehicles in the area.
Officers swept the area and saw two men near the area of Cass Street and Highway 1. When police attempted to apprehend the men, they fled from the officers. The Lisbon Police K-9, Linn County Sheriff's Office, Iowa State Patrol and Iowa Department of Motor Vehicle Enforcement were called in to assist in the search.
Police found 18-year-old Cordel Mayfield hiding in a window well at a residence in the 300 block of Eighth Street NW. He was taken into custody and faces charges of third-degree burglary, burglary of a motor vehicle, and interference with official acts.
Shortly after 8 a.m., a Linn County deputy spotted the second subject near Third Avenue and First Street NW. When the deputy made contact, the suspect fled. He was taken into custody after a brief foot chase. The man, identified as 19-year-old Hayden Mayfield, faces charges of third-degree burglary, possession of prescription drugs, burglary of a motor vehicle, and interference with official acts.
Police said they have received several reports of homes, garages, and vehicles being entered and the case remains under investigation. Anyone with information related to this case is asked to call the Mount Vernon Police Department.
