HILLS - A Tiffin man has been identified as the subject who led police on a chase that ended in Hills and prompted the elementary school there to go into lockdown.
According to Johnson County Sheriff's Office criminal complaints, at 3:36 p.m. Tuesday, a deputy attempted to stop a Chevrolet Malibu that was traveling southbound in the area of 480th Street and Sand Road. Authorities said the car was going 75 mph in a 55 mph zone.
The deputy activated his lights and attempted to stop the Malibu, but it pulled away. The chase topped speeds of 100 mph, police said.
Police said the driver ran a stop sign at Sand Road and 520th Street and turned westbound on 520th. The vehicle was located at Third and Main streets in Hills, but the driver had already fled, police said.
A passenger in the vehicle identified the driver as 19-year-old Taylin J. Anderson. A K-9 officer was called in and tracked Anderson to an apartment complex near Hills Elementary school. The nearby police presence led school officials to go into a voluntary lockdown, affecting only the children who remained at the school for after-school programming.
Anderson was arrested and faces charges of eluding and driving while barred, both aggravated misdemeanors. He was also wanted on warrants related to a probation violation in a third-degree burglary case, according to jail and court records.
