Stolen gun, marijuana found after Iowa City traffic stop

IOWA CITY - Police recovered a stolen gun and marijuana following a traffic stop early Sunday morning.

According to Iowa City police, officers made a traffic stop around 12:09 a.m. and Ronald P. Thompson, 25, was a passenger in the vehicle. Police said they could smell marijuana coming from the vehicle, which prompted a search.

During the search, police found a gun under Thompson's seat and two plastic bags containing what appeared to be marijuana on Thompson. Police said the gun was determined to have been stolen in Iowa City last month.

Thompson faces charges of trafficking in stolen weapons and possession of a controlled substance - third offense. Police said Thompson has two prior drug convictions.
