Sheriff’s offices warn of phone scams

CEDAR RAPIDS - The Linn County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a phone scam.
According to the sheriff's office, several citizens have reported receiving phone calls from a person identifying themselves as a Linn County deputy. The caller then says the resident failed to show up to jury duty or committed some other violation and must post bond immediately in order to avoid being arrested.
Officials from the sheriff's office reported they will not request money over the phone. Anyone who receives a call like this is asked to write down the number of the caller, hang up and report it to the authorities.
Officials from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office said they took reports of a similar scam last week.
