Sheriff’s Office to increase enforcement during St. Patrick’s Day period

CEDAR RAPIDS - The Linn County Sheriff's Office will be on the lookout for drunk drivers leading up to St. Patrick's Day.
According to a news release from the sheriff's office, deputies will be taking part in the Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau's special Traffic Enforcement Program with other law enforcement agencies across the state. The enforcement period begins Wednesday and goes through Saturday.
Law enforcement participating in the sTEP enforcement will be focusing on drunken driving, speed and seat belt enforcement.
Iowa had zero fatalities during the St. Patrick's Day holiday in 2016, but there were 458 crashes resulting in 756 injuries, 16 of which were serious, according to the sheriff's office. Most of those serious crashes occurred on St. Patrick's Day between midnight and 6 a.m.
