Some residents in Iowa City's Peninsula neighborhood were temporarily evacuated from their homes Monday night while police dealt with a man alleged to have a gun.
Iowa City police officers were called at 9:48 p.m. Monday to a residence on Foster Road after the resident called police to say she had been having problems with her son, according to Lt. Mike Brotherton. The mother reported her son was suffering some mental distress and she believed he had access to weapons.
Brotherton said police cleared neighbors out of surrounding residences in case the man started shooting. After getting the mother out of the home, police worked on convincing the man to leave the residence. He eventually came out of the residence at 10:55 p.m., Brotherton said.
'It took a little convincing,” Brotherton said.
Brotherton said evacuating the neighboring residences was standard procedure. He was uncertain if police found any weapons, but believed the man was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Because no actual criminal activity is suspected of occurring, Brotherton said no charges were pending against the man.
