CEDAR RAPIDS - Police responded to a fight near Metro High School around midday on Friday.
Cedar Rapids Police Lt. Tobey Harrison said police were responding to a fight near Seventh Street and 12th Avenue SE, but did not provide any additional details at the scene. Numerous officers, as well as medical personnel, were still on the scene after the melee had been quelled.
At least one person was taken from the scene in a squad car.
Cody Walter, a student at Metro High School, said he saw a large fight of about 10 to 15 people - men and women - taking place. He watched the incident unfold from a window in the school, he said.
'It was pretty violent,” Walter said, adding he saw participants stomping on each other.
Cedar Rapids Community School District Deputy Superintendent Mary Ellen Maske told The Gazette the district is aware of the brawl, but said law enforcement officials were handling it.
'It's really a police matter,” she said.
Harrison said additional information on the fight would be released later.
