Police: Man drove across Iowa City pedestrian bridge

Mar. 13, 2015 2:06 pm
IOWA CITY - Thousands of vehicles drive under the pedestrian bridge at Iowa Avenue and Riverside Drive each day.
One man drove over it, police said.
Iowa City police said an Illinois man completed a task while allegedly drunk that most would never attempt while sober: driving a car over the narrow pedestrian bridge, which starts as a straight ramp, but ends in a corkscrew.
According to the criminal complaint, around 1:23 a.m. Friday, multiple bystanders reported seeing a car on the pedestrian bridge at Iowa Avenue. The bridge is barely a car width wide and roughly 40 feet above the street below at its highest point.
Police said when an officer arrived at the scene, the car was on the sidewalk. The officer spoke with the driver, 19-year-old Brian D. Bordwell, and noted he showed multiple signs of intoxication. Police said his blood alcohol content was above the legal limit of .08 percent, but the criminal complaint does not give his actual blood alcohol content.
Bordwell was arrested and faces one count of drunken driving, a serious misdemeanor.
