IOWA CITY - A certified nursing assistant is accused of forging a dead man's name on a stolen check.
According to an Iowa City police criminal complaint, back in September, 45-year-old Musambe A. Lusanga, of Coralville, was employed as a certified nursing assistant in an Iowa City retirement home. Police said Lusanga took possession of a 91-year-old resident's personal check.
Police said on Sept. 15, the resident died. The following day Lusanga allegedly forged the check in the amount of $3,500 and made it out to one of her friends. Lusanga then deposited the bogus check into her friends US Bank account and then attempted to use her friend's debit card to withdraw the money from an ATM.
US Bank officials detected the fraud and did not honor the check, police said.
Lusanga allegedly told police she forged the check, but that the victim told her he wanted her to have $3,500 before he died.
Lusanga has been arrested and faces one count of forgery, a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
