Perkins’ family releases statement following fatal shooting

CEDAR RAPIDS - The family of Joseph Perkins, Jr. released a statement on Thursday.
'Joseph was a loving family man of outspoken character,” the statement said. 'A comedian at heart, he cared about everyone else above himself.”
Perkins, 25, of Chicago, was killed Tuesday night in a shooting at Cedar Valley Townhomes, 3000 J. Street SW. The shooting was reported around 9:34 p.m.
Police said a vehicle pulled into the parking lot, a shooter got out, shot Perkins as well as a 21-year-old man and then fled in the vehicle. Police have not released any suspect or vehicle descriptions. The 21-year-old suffered a non-life threatening injury to his leg. Police have not released his name.
April McIntire, a victim advocate with Horizons' survivors program, said Perkins' family did not wish to speak with the media.
Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said there was no new information to release in the investigation on Thursday. The investigation is active and ongoing, he said.
Cedar Valley Townhomes, 3000 J St SW, was the site of the city's first homicide for 2016.
