IOWA CITY - A University of Iowa student faces prison time after threatening to bring a gun to a University of Iowa ceremony.
According to a University of Iowa police criminal complaint, around 11:30 a.m. Friday, Soliman Obaid B. Altamimi, 25, went to the UI International Programs office in the University Capitol Centre. There, Altamimi asked about giving a speech at an upcoming ceremony.
Authorities said when International Programs staff told Altamimi he would not be giving a speech, he replied, 'Then I will bring a gun to the final ceremony.”
Altamimi made that threat twice, police said.
Police said when they spoke with Altamimi, he admitted to making the threat. Altamimi made a similar threat in November 2016 when he said he would bring a gun to the International Programs office and shoot international students, police said.
Altamimi is listed as a student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in the UI directory.
Altamimi was arrested and faces one count of a threat of terrorism, a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
