Late night fire in Cedar Rapids displaces occupants

Jun. 14, 2016 9:01 am
CEDAR RAPIDS — No one was injured by a late-night fire that did heavy damage to a Cedar Rapids home Monday.
The Cedar Rapids Fire Department was called to 211 15th St. SE at 11:30 p.m. Monday for a report of a structure fire with residents possibly trapped inside. Responding crews found the entire rear side of the two-story four-plex was engulfed in flames.
After an interior search was conducted, firefighters were pulled out of the structure as fire had spread across the attic. The fire was attacked from the rear and required most of the ceiling to be removed in order to extinguish the smoldering rafters, according to the fire department.
Firefighters said the occupants of the building were displaced by the fire, but not injured. They are being assisted by the American Red Cross and Salvation Army. Cedar Rapids police and Area Ambulance also responded to the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
