Johnson County sheriff’s deputy cited after weekend crash

Nov. 30, 2015 11:16 am
OXFORD — An on-duty Johnson County Sheriff's Office deputy was cited by the Iowa State Patrol this weekend for a collision that hospitalized one person.
Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek said deputy Ryan Quiles was on routine patrol around 4:20 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28 at the intersection of Highway 6 and 109, north of Oxford. Pulkrabek said Quiles was stopped at a stop sign on 109, waiting to go southbound across Highway 6 when he pulled in front of a vehicle that was eastbound on Highway 6. The two vehicles collided, Pulkrabek said.
Pulkrabek said there were three people in the civilian vehicle and one was taken to the hospital via ambulance. The sheriff said he believes that person was treated and released. The other people involved in the crash — including the deputy — were checked at the scene and did not require transport to the hospital, Pulkrabek said.
The Iowa State Patrol investigated the crash and cited Quiles for failure to yield upon entering a thoroughfare.
Pulkrabek said the crash will be investigated internally in accordance with department policy.
'We do open (an investigation) and we have opened one up,' he said. 'We have our own internal investigation on what took place.'
Pulkrabek said the deputy remains on active duty while the internal investigation is underway. Any disciplinary actions would be confidential, Pulkrabek said.
