IOWA CITY — An Iowa City woman is accused of hitting her estranged partner over the head with a 2x4.
According to an Iowa City police criminal complaint, the victim — who is not named — was at home with his current girlfriend at 2:39 a.m. Aug. 30. Police said 41-year-old Shantina M. Tate broke into the Hollywood Boulevard apartment and assaulted the man. Tate hit the man with a 2x4, causing swelling and a cut, police said.
Tate also damaged the door frame when she broke into the residence, police said.
Police said Tate and the victim had been in a relationship within the last year, but are not currently together. The two offered different accounts of their marital status, police said.
Tate was arrested and faces a charge of domestic assault causing injury, a serious misdemeanor. A serious misdemeanor is punishable by up to one year in jail.
