Iowa City man faces drug charges after traffic stop

IOWA CITY — An Iowa City man faces multiple drug charges after a traffic stop.

According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, 31-year-old Henry G. Johnson was seen driving a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am with no license plates at 1800 Taylor Drive around 12:23 a.m. Aug. 6. Police said as an officer pulled up to the vehicle, he heard a female passenger yelling and saw Johnson get out of the driver's seat.

Johnson initially ignored the officer's commands to stop and talk with him, forcing the officer to place him in handcuffs, police said. Police said Johnson failed field sobriety tests, showed signs of intoxication and admitted to drinking. He refused a breath test, but was arrested for second-offense drunken driving and interference with official acts.

While being booked at the jail, Johnson County deputies found nine individually packaged baggies of marijuana hidden on Johnson's body, earning him additional charges of controlled substance violation and possession of contraband in a correctional facility, both Class D felonies.

Johnson was also wanted on warrants for an unrelated incident in December 2015. Members of the Johnson County Drug Task Force served a search warrant at his then-home at 320 Second St. in Coralville and found marijuana, cash and packaging materials. He was wanted on charges of controlled substance violation and Iowa drug tax stamp violation, both Class D felonies, for that incident.

Johnson remains in custody at the Johnson County Jail.
