Iowa City man faces charges in drunken robbery

IOWA CITY - An Iowa City man faces numerous charges for allegedly robbing and assaulting another man while drunk.
According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, around 10:23 p.m. Wednesday, 33-year-old Kellen J. Herdt was walking with a friend near the intersection of Gilbert and Washington streets in downtown Iowa City. Police said Herdt and his friend came across another man and a verbal argument ensued.
Herdt pushed the man into his friend and the friend, who is not identified in the complaints, pushed and punched the victim, knocking him to the ground and knocking out a tooth. Police said Herdt started to leave the scene, but returned to the victim on the ground and took his wallet.
Herdt was found a short distance away and taken into custody, Police said he was intoxicated and had a pipe with marijuana residue in his pocket. He faces charges of second-degree robbery, a Class C felony; assault, a simple misdemeanor; possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor; and public intoxication, a simple misdemeanor.
