IOWA CITY - An Iowa City man is accused of trafficking a stolen handgun used in a shooting.
According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, on Oct. 31, 2016, police spoke with an acquaintance of Derek J. Delaney, 20. The acquaintance told police he had given a stolen gun to Delaney a few days earlier and that the gun had been used in a shooting in Iowa City earlier that week.
Police said the acquaintance took detectives to Delaney's home to retrieve the firearm. Police said Delaney handed over a Colt .380 pistol to his acquaintance, who turned it over to the detectives. The gun was confirmed to be stolen, police said.
On Nov. 2, 2016, police served a search warrant at Delaney's home and recovered three grams of marijuana and 9.7 grams of DMT, a psychedelic drug.
Delaney was arrested this week and faces charges of trafficking in stolen weapons, a Class D felony; and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.
