IOWA CITY - An Iowa City man is accused of robbing a Subway restaurant at gunpoint.
According to an Iowa City police criminal complaint, around 7:20 a.m. Thursday, 26-year-old Charles D. Harris walked into the Subway at 1901 Broadway St. Police said Harris asked an employee for a piece of paper, on which he wrote, 'This is a robbery, gimme all your money or get shot.” Harris then gave the pice of paper to the clerk, displayed a handgun and pointed it at the clerk, according to police.
Police said the clerk gave Harris all of the money in the cash register, which was $49.40. Harris then fled out the front door.
Officers responded and discovered a trail of change leading east from the store. Police said Harris lives two blocks east of the Subway at 2021 Taylor Drive.
Additionally, investigators noted in surveillance footage that Harris was not wearing gloves during the robbery and places his hands down on the counter several times. Officers were able to dust for and recover several prints that were then sent to the Cedar Rapids Police Department Crime Lab. Those prints were checked against federal fingerprint data basis, both of which came up with matches for Harris, according to police.
A search warrant was filed at Harris' residence and police recovered both the handgun and the clothing he wore during the robbery. Harris admitted to robbing the Subway, police said.
Harris was arrested and faces one count of first-degree robbery, a Class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison.
