IOWA CITY - The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a house fire Sunday afternoon.
Crews were called to 1984 Mackinaw Dr. at 1:49 p.m. Sunday after passers-by noticed smoke coming from the attic. All of the occupants were able to safety leave the home before firefighters arrived.
Responding units encountered smoke coming from the roof of the home and firefighters found the blaze in the attic area of the home. The fire was extinguished and crews remained on the scene for about two hours.
The occupants told firefighters they believed the home was struck by lightning earlier in the day, but the fire remains under investigation. The residence sustained approximately $25,000 in damage.
The fire department was assisted by the Johnson County Ambulance Service, Iowa City Police Department, MidAmerican Energy and the American Red Cross.
