Hiawatha man accused of taking another person’s vehicle, crashing it into building

HIAWATHA - A Hiawatha man is accused of taking and crashing another person's vehicle.
According to the Linn County Attorney's Office, 31-year-old Jaylani D. Whiteside took a vehicle belonging to another man and crashed it into a building at 880 Robins Road. Whiteside fled the scene, but was arrested a short time later at his residence on Boyson Road.
Authorities said Whiteside, who has a suspended license, admitted to consuming alcohol and marijuana before the crash. He refused chemical testing, authorities said.
Whiteside has been charged with operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent and drunken driving.
