CORALVILLE - A Coralville man was found to have two pounds of marijuana and 31 grams of heroin in his vehicle after a high speed pursuit.
According to Iowa State Patrol criminal complaints, on Dec. 4 around 8:20 p.m., a trooper initiated a traffic stop for a speeding violation in the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 at the Dubuque Street exit. Authorities said the driver of the speeding vehicle, 37-year-old Sultan T. Bismillah, refused to pull over and sped away from the trooper. The trooper followed Bismillah, with speeds reaching 135 mph in a 65 mph zone.
Bismillah exited the interstate and continued to attempt to elude law enforcement by driving through commercial and residential areas of Coralville. Authorities said he eventually stopped and surrendered to officers.
After he surrendered, authorities found Bismillah had a 4-year-old child in the rear passenger seat of the vehicle.
That's not all they found. After obtaining a search warrant for the vehicle, authorities discovered two pounds of marijuana and 31 grams of heroin hidden in the vehicle.
Bismillah was arrested and so far faces charges of eluding, a Class D felony; and child endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor. If convicted of both offenses, Bismillah could face up to seven years in prison.
