Garage fire in Iowa City leaves $12,000 in damage

IOWA CITY - A fire did $12,000 in damage to an Iowa City garage early Tuesday morning.
The Iowa City Fire Department was called to a structure fire at 1224 Baker St. at 1:07 a.m. Tuesday. Responding units - including three engines, a ladder truck and a battalion chief - reported seeing smoke coming from the garage of the split, foyer-style home.
Firefighters forced their way into the garage and quickly put out a fire inside. The resident was outside of the home when crews arrived. The entire residence sustained smoke damage estimated at about $12,000.
No one was injured in the fire and the Red Cross was called in to assist the homeowner. The fire remains under investigation.
