IOWA CITY — The four men and a juvenile arrested after a shots fired incident in Iowa City on Monday all face interference with official acts charges.
A fifth man, Brandon L. Juniel, and the juvenile, face possession of marijuana charges.
According to criminal complaints made available today and a news release, Iowa City police arrested Victor B. Jones, 18; Dimione J. Walker, 24; Daivon D. Jones, 18; Dearl R. Johnson, 20; Juniel, 22; and a juvenile - all of Iowa City - following an incident that took place near an elementary school Monday.
Officers were called to the area of Grant Wood Elementary School, 1930 Lakeside Drive, at 12:32 p.m. Monday for a report of a man that was shot. Responding officers learned there had been an incident involving a gun at Lakeside Drive and Amber Lane, but that no one was injured.
Witnesses told police that there was a brief altercation involving six to seven people and one suspect pulled a gun and fired it into the ground.
Criminal complaints state that one officer noticed three men at the intersection of Russell and Whetherby drives. When he went to speak with them, the men ran away. The officer followed Victor Jones through several yard before another officer ordered him to the ground. Jones was handcuffed and taken to jail.
Authorities said Walker was also pursued through several yards before being taken into custody. He allegedly told police he ran because he had a warrant out for his arrest.
After fleeing from officers, Daivon Jones tried to hide under a bush, but was captured.
Johnson was arrested when officers were called to the 2200 block of Bancroft Drive for a report of a suspicious person. Police said he was witnessed smashing a safe against the ground and trying to open it. Johnson fled from police and was captured in a backyard in the 1500 block of Tracy Lane. Police said Johnson resisted arrest.
Several of the men had outstanding warrants for their arrests. According to court records, Daivon Jones was wanted for failing to appear at arraignments for various prior arrests. Victor Jones was wanted on a warrant for fourth-degree criminal mischief for an incident on Nov. 21 in which he allegedly got into an argument at a home in the 1300 block of Sandusky Drive and broke out three windows.
Walker was wanted on a warrant for driving while barred. Police said Walker was spotted leaving a parking ramp when police were investigating the Iowa City Pedestrian Mall shooting on Aug. 27. The car he was driving did not have license plates, police said. Walker was also wanted on a warrant for failing to appear for a case management conference on a malicious prosecution arrest.
Interference with official acts is a simple misdemeanor.
Johnson was wanted on warrants for failure to appear on charges for possession of a controlled substance and driving while barred.
The incident remains under investigation, police said Tuesday.
