CRFD responds to gravel bin fire

CEDAR RAPIDS - Cedar Rapids firefighters responded to an industrial fire Thursday morning.
According to a fire department news release, crews were called to Forterra Pipe & Precast, 3921 J St. SW, around 9:49 a.m. Thursday for a report of a gravel bin fire. There, firefighters encountered smoke and flames coming from an aggregate vertical leg used to move product into an overhead bin. Firefighters said the rubber belting on the leg was on fire.
Crews attacked the fire and it was extinguished. The leg sustained significant damage, but the Forterra Pipe & Precast facility was not affected, the fire department said. There were no reported injuries.
