CEDAR RAPIDS - A Cedar Rapids man and another driver suffered minor injuries after a crash Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Cedar Rapids Police Department, 35-year-old Nicklaus J. Schoelerman was eastbound on First Avenue W around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when he crossed over from the middle lane and hit a Dodge that was in the inside lane at 15th Street. Police said the impact of the collision caused Schoelerman's SUV to roll over on to its side.
When Schoelerman's SUV rolled over, it collided with a westbound Lexus, police said.
Police said numerous witnesses saw Schoelerman leave the scene on foot and followed him as he traveled southbound on 15th Street. The witnesses pointed out Schoelerman to responding officers, who arrested him at Trinity Lutheran Church in the 1400 block of Seventh Avenue SW. Police said they found a marijuana pipe in Schoelerman's vehicle.
In addition to Schoelerman and one of the other driver's suffering minor injuries, police said Schoelerman caused $10,000 in damage to the Dodge and $5,000 in damage to the Lexus.
Schoelerman faces charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to maintain control and having no proof of insurance.
