IOWA CITY - A Coralville man arrested earlier this month for having sex with a woman and not telling her he has HIV faces an additional charge after a second victim came forward.
Iowa City Police Sgt. Scott Gaarde said after reading media reports about the arrest of 34-year-old Adam D. Musser for criminal transmission of an infectious disease to another person, a second victim came forward to police. The woman reported to police she had intercourse with Musser five times between May and June and that Musser had lied about his health.
The woman sought medical treatment and, as of August 17, testing has shown she is not infected with HIV, police said.
Musser was arrested by Coralville police on Aug. 9 after their investigation showed he had unprotected sex with the victim approximately 40 times in June and July. Police said Musser also told that woman he was disease-free.
According to court records, Musser was sentenced to 50 years in prison in 2004 for four counts of criminal transmission of HIV. He filed multiple appeals of his sentence, but those appeals were overturned. He was released from prison in October 2012, according to Department of Corrections records.
Musser faces two counts of criminal transmission of an infectious disease to another person. One count is a Class B felony and the other is a Class D, due to the victim not contracting the infection. If convicted of both offenses, Musser could spend up to 30 years in prison. He remains in custody at the Johnson County Jail.
