Cedar Rapids to offer summer safety camps for kids

CEDAR RAPIDS - The City of Cedar Rapids will offer two safety camps for children this summer.
The Fire & Life Safety Summer Camp will take place at the Cedar Rapids Fire Department's Central Station, 713 First Ave. SE, from June 20-24. The camp, which goes from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., is for children ages 6-8 and is $100 per child. Topics include fire escape planning, smoke alarm education, handling 911 emergencies, bike helmet safety and first aid. Participants will spray a fire hose, ride a firetruck, meet the department's arson dog and visit the 911 dispatch center.
The Safe Kids Heroes' Safety Camp will also take place at Central Station and will run from July 18-22. The camp, which will go from 9 a.m. to noon, is for children ages 6-8 and is also $100 per child. Topics covered include 911 emergencies, first aid and bike, poison, vehicle, water and weather safety.
