Cedar Rapids teen charged after shots fired incident

Mar. 8, 2016 8:25 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - A 16-year-old is in custody following a foot chase and shots fired incident Tuesday evening.
Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said an officer on patrol in the 1500 block of First Avenue NE attempted to stop a suspicious person around 5:04 p.m. Police said when the officer approached the subject - later identified as a 16-year-old boy - the boy fled on foot.
As the boy was running, he shot at least one round from a handgun. Buelow said it is unclear if the boy deliberately fired at the officer or if the weapon accidentally discharged.
The teen was caught by officers in the 1500 block of E Avenue NE. A handgun was recovered. He was taken into custody and faces charges of reckless use of a firearm, carrying weapons and interference with official acts.
The incident remains under investigation.
