IOWA CITY - A Cedar Rapids man is accused of robbing a woman with a BB gun and shooting another woman.
According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, on the evening of Nov. 14, 18-year-old Devin D. Cariens Hook and a juvenile, Brandon Goad, were driving around Iowa City and shooting at 'random people” with a CO2-powered BB gun.
Police said sometime around 8 p.m., Cariens Hook and Goad spotted a woman walking alone in the 600 block of South Gilbert Street and decided to rob her to get gas money for the van. With Goad driving, the van pulled up alongside the woman and Cariens Hook got out, rushed the woman and demanded money while threatening her with the BB gun, according to police. Cariens Hook then got back in the van and they sped off, police said.
Police said another woman was shot twice in the chest that night and was injured. Both women provided a description of the van.
Police said they found the van and seized the BB gun, which resembled a real firearm. Cariens Hook was also wearing clothing that matched the suspect description provided by the robbery victim.
Police said Cariens Hook admitted to his actions during an investigation. He has been arrested and faces charges of first-degree robbery, a Class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison; and assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison.
Police said Goad is to be charged as an adult for his role in the incident.
