CEDAR RAPIDS - A Cedar Rapids man faces prison time for a crash that killed a Cedar Rapids woman last year.
According to Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow, on Nov. 19, 2016, officers responded to a two-vehicle accident with injuries in the 300 block of Edgewood Road NW at 4:37 p.m. Authorities said a silver 2007 Lincoln MKZ driven by 74-year-old Joyce Harris pulled out of a parking lot in front of a gray 2015 Chevrolet Camaro driven by 26-year-old Alexander A. Coleman, who was northbound on Edgewood.
Buelow said Coleman collided with the side of Harris' vehicle and she was injured in the collision. She was taken to Mercy Medical Center and later to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where she died Nov. 30 of blunt force trauma. Her death was determined to be caused by the collision, Buelow said.
'The speed of the Camaro was a significant factor in the crash,” Buelow said, citing an investigation by a department accident reconstruction specialist.
The investigation determined that Coleman was going more than twice the posted speed limit of 35 mph prior to the collision.
'The accident could have been avoided if Alexander Coleman … wasn't speeding while traveling northbound on Edgewood Road,” Buelow said.
Coleman faces one count of homicide by vehicle, a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
