CEDAR RAPIDS - A Cedar Rapids firefighter and paramedic has been selected to attend the International Association of Fire Fighters International Burn Camp.
According to a Cedar Rapids Fire Department news release, Julie Popelka will attend the camp, which will be hosted at Camp Wabanna near Washington, D.C., from Sept. 23-30. The camp is offered to young burn survivors and is designed to show them they are not alone and that there are resources for them. The camp includes tours of monuments, memorials and museums and other activities, according to the fire department.
The camp is made up of representatives from regional burn camps in the United States and Canada.
Popelka, a counselor at the Miracle Burn Camp - hosted annually at YMCA Camp Foster on East Lake Okoboji - and Zoie Evens, a camper, will attend the International Burn Camp.
