IOWA CITY - A house fire did an estimated $15,000 in damage to an Iowa City home Monday night, authorities said.
According to the Iowa City Fire Department, crews were called to 1412 Lower Muscatine Road at 10:18 p.m. Monday for smoke coming from the roof vent of a duplex. Firefighters found a fire in the kitchen of the unit and put it out within 10 minutes of responding, according to reports.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
According to an Iowa City police criminal complaint, the home was broken into after the fire. Police said while they were on scene at the duplex, the tenant of the other unit, Alexander A. Wynn, 22, was seen leaving the scene on foot.
After the fire was put out and the victims went through the home with fire officials, they noticed a television and laptop were missing. Police determined the home had been entered by cutting a screen and pushing a window open.
Authorities walked through Wynn's unit with his father and found the missing TV in a closet, police said. Wynn was later found lying in a wooded area behind the duplex. The missing laptop was found in his backpack, police said.
Wynn was arrested and faces one count of third-degree burglary, a Class D felony.
